What Are The Benefits of a Colon Cleanse?

Our bodies take in many pounds of toxins each year from the foods we eat, the air we breath and many of the skincare products we use.  It is essential to keep our eliminative channels working well. How do toxins get into my body?

  • Through your nose and into your lungs. You are breathing in polluted air from:

    • Indoor air pollution such as off-gassing carpets, dust, dust mites, pet dander, drywall particulate if you have been renovating, mold, lacquers, flame retardants sprayed on furniture during manufacturing, etc.
    • Outdoor air pollution from cars (especially in Los Angeles), lawn treatments, pest control sprays, jet fuel, pollen,  etc.

  • Through your mouth:

Foods you eat containing pesticides, chemicals, dyes, preservatives or taste enhancers, alcohol, heavy metals from cookware, etc.

  • Through your skin:

Hair products, skin creams, makeup, cologne, deodorants, toothpaste, etc.

  • Your body produces its own toxins if:

You have viruses, bacterial overgrowth, candida or fungal conditions. These pathogens literally excrete their waste products into your body.

How Does a Colonic Cleanse Help?

Water has been used for centuries for healing purposes.

A colon cleanse can mean anything from taking some herbs to doing a salt water flush to eating a certain way to juicing to having colon hydrotherapy, also known as a colonic.

Colon hydrotherapy can help you by lessening the toxic load in your body. When it is not bogged down with so much toxicity, your body can heal and rebalance.

Hydrotherapy is a unique and effective way of cleansing the whole body when done correctly. It can remove toxins from the body, and fuel the body with the proper life giving foods so that healthy tissue can rebuild and healing can occur.

How Does Colon Hydrotherapy Work?

A small amount of purified water is introduced into the colon which cleanses and hydrates it.

The gentle infusion of water stimulates the body’s natural muscle action of peristalsis. This is the action that happens whenever you have a bowel movement.

Not All Cleanses Work Equally Well

Not all colon cleanses do the same thing. There are a variety of treatments on the market today that focus on getting the colon to eliminate more often, which can be helpful. There are even many colonic places that never touch upon nutrition.

Colon hydrotherapy is different than a simple colon cleanse. Food plays an integral role in cleansing and building healthy new tissue.

When we combine colon hydrotherapy with nutrition, the colonic itself is 50% of the cleanse process. Eating correctly and knowing what to eat to maintain your health constitutes the other 50%. As a nutritionist, I will provide you with proper nutritional guidelines. People can experience amazing health benefits when the cleanse incorporates both the colonic and the nutritional aspects.

The toxins in our bodies are not only in the gut. Toxins are in our organs, tissues and cells. Skin is our largest organ of elimination and just under it is our lymphatic system which holds a vast amount of toxins. Dry skin brushing each day can help the health and tone of your skin and eliminate toxins from it as well.

What to Look for in a Colon Hydrotherapist

You will want to find a certified, experienced and skilled colon hydrotherapist. Colon hydrotherapy is currently not a licensed profession in California. Practitioners are usually certified, though it is not required. Skill level and training can greatly vary from practitioner to practitioner.

If you looking for colon hydrotherapy in Culver City or the nearby West Los Angeles area with a certified colon hydrotherapist, visit us at Vitality Flow.

I-ACT Certification

Find a colon hydrotherapist certifed through I-ACT, the International Association of Colon Hydrotherapists. I-ACT strives to uphold high standards with their certification requirements and the following tenets:

  • I-ACT establishes guidelines regarding safety of hydrotherapy practice and equipment, and the skill of the colon hydrotherapy practitioner.
  • I-ACT establishes the training standards and guidelines.
  • I-ACT is committed to work with the FDA, international organizations, states and municipalities to enhance the safety of colon hydrotherapy.
  • I-ACT is the certifying body for colon hydrotherapists around the world.

Training with an M.D.

If possible, locate a colon hydrotherapist who has trained with a medical doctor. There are many good I-ACT accredited training programs for practitioners that don’t require studying with an M.D. However, an internship with a medical doctor provides:

  • A broader scope of education
  • More varied clinical experience
  • Medical perspectives and considerations for the safe practice of colon hydrotherapy

A Safe Aproach

Look for a colon hydrotherapist who has a safe and gentle approach to colonics and who avoids radical cleanses. Some doctors recommend purified water only for the colonic process.

Currently popular additives such as coffee, wheatgrass, probiotics and salt to the colon hydrotherapy water may not be safe for everyone.  For example, if you have an unyet known allergy to grasses, a wheatgrass additive could trigger a strong allergic reaction. Additionally, if a solution of salt that is not correct is added to the colon, it could trigger vasovagal syncope (fainting).

At Vitality Flow, safety is our first priority.

Background in Nutrition

Look for a colon hydrotherapist with a background in nutrition who can guide you through the colonics process and help you make healthy nutritional changes. This is an essential part of your success with colon hydrotherapy.

Puts You At Ease

Find a colon hydrotherapist with whom you feel comfortable. If you don’t feel at ease, it won’t matter how credentialed they are.

Colon hydrotherapy is different than a simple colon cleanse. In colon hydrotherapy combined with nutrition, the colonic is 50% of the cleanse process. Eating correctly is the other 50% of the process.

The Importance of FDA Approved Equipment

There are different systems for colon hydrotherapy that generally fall under two different categories. Not all of these are FDA approved.

Open System

  • The client is in the treatment room on their own.
  • They can ring a bell to summon the colon hydrotherapist for assistance.
  • Waste and gas exposed to the air.
  • Client self-administers the water.
  • An open system may be preferable for people who have poor rectal sphincter tone / incontinence.
  • Equipment: Libbe.

Closed System

  • The therapist is in the treatment room for the entire treatment.
  • Waste and gases are contained and not exposed to air.
  • The therapist administers the water.
  • A view tube allows observing of waste materials.
  • Equipment may be: Hydro-San*, Dotolo, Transcom, Angel of Water.

*The Hydro-San “Closed” Colon Hydrotherapy System that we use at Vitality Flow provides the highest level of safety, hygiene and comfort. The Hydro-San is an FDA approved instrument manufactured in the United States that meets the most stringent standards for hygiene and safety. Our instrument is routinely inspected and maintained by the manufacturer, and has a built in cleansing mechanism that allows it to be sterilized after each session with a medical grade cleaner.

Our closed system is sanitary because the waste is contained in the tubing and hoses. The instrument  is directly connected to the plumbing system and the waste flows directly into the sewage system just as when you flush the toilet. We have a triple water filtration system.

We never use reusable metal speculums or hoses. We use disposable speculum kits (the tube and hoses) that are FDA approved and come in sealed packaging. They are discarded after your session.

We are able to easily maintain constant temperature (or modify if needed) with our equipment for the comfort of the client. A pressure gauge on our equipment allows us to ensure that a very gentle pressure is used throughout the session.

With this closed colon hydrotherapy system, the therapist is in the room assisting you for the entire duration of session. Our equipment allows the client and therapist to observe the results of the session.

For the vast majority of people, the closed system is best. However, for those who have a slack rectal tone from childbirth, aging or other reason, an open system may be better suited to their needs. Vitality Flow can refer you to a reputable open-system practitioner.
